Back to back days of Remix Report….just like the olden days. No plans on stopping either. As I said in the last post, we’re just starting to get things back on track. In order to get caught up, we’re gonna bring you some hot remixes of the more popular songs everyday this week. Today, it’s Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and I have four dope remixes that I’ve managed to include in my sets at different times. They all provide a pretty different feel, which allows you to play them at different times and easily switch up how and when you throw this song on. Here they are in no particular order:
1) Daft Punk – Get Lucky (Mysto + Pizzi Remix)
I’m sure some people will hate on this one. And after scrolling through the Soundcloud comments, I was right, but there were actually less haters than I expected. For some reason, there are people who think certain “smash hits” shouldn’t be remixed. And it’s usually hits that have a lot of soul. Those who’ve watched our videos on this site before know how silly I think that is, and now that I actually had to type out that previous sentence, I think it’s even sillier. 1) I think its funny that people think because THEY like a song, no else should be allowed to touch it. Pretty selfish. 2) It’s also funny that people are so protective of songs that are soulful like this. These people wouldn’t care if you took an electro banger and made it somewhat mellow, but once you take a chill song like this and flip it to electro, some people freak out as if you erased the original recording and replaced it. One of my favorite things about remixing is the ability to change the feel of a song. Why not be able to enjoy your favorite song no matter what your mood is? And that’s just the point of view of someone who enjoys music. As a DJ, its an awesome thing to have different mixes of a song that you can play at different points of the night. Not sure what the problem could possibly be. If you don’t like a certain style of music, don’t listen to that remix. Anyway, am I mad bro? Yes. But enough of that.
Obviously, you can guess before even listening that Mysto + Pizzi went in a totally different direction here. A couple of the remixes I’ll talk about below kept the original vibe and built the energy a bit. Well this one totally scraps the original vibe to bring the energy up….and I don’t care, I love it. They gave it a huge Nari & Milani /Jewelz & Scott Sparks type drop that hits real hard. There’s also a break in the middle where they recorded their own vocals to give you a small taste of the original before building back up to the second drop. Out of the four mixes I’m mentioning today, this is one that I drop if I wanna play “Get Lucky” middle of the night prime time. I also think it’s the one that people will notice you the most for. In other words, when you play this one, there is no mistaking that you switched up your set from last time.
2) Daft Punk – Get luck (Joe Maz Remix)
Not a whole lot to add here. This is pretty much what you’d expect from a Joe Maz remix…..something extremely well done and very club friendly. It has a nice 16 bar intro with a build up that leads to a nice reaction when the chorus drops. The track really builds smoothly the whole way, and has a nice break in the middle, then comes back with a vengeance (in the form of some heavy guitar synths) to give you energy once more before mixing out. Dope all around, and perhaps the best choice if you are looking to stay close to the original, while maintaining enough energy for your club.
3) Daft Punk – Get Lucky (Hot Mouth & The Frederik Remix)
This is another dope remix that keeps the original feel, but somehow manages to do so while incorporating some heavy electro sounds as well. Tremendous job by Hot Mouth and The Frederik on this. This one clocks in at 128BPM and while it starts out a bit relaxed, you get the sense it’s gonna get a bit heavier and it does. This is almost a bit like what the young kids are calling “Complextro”. Real dope sound that I can see being a little too hard for some spots, but for those who wanna get filthy, this offers just that.
4) Daft Punk – Get Lucky (TC Bootleg)
I’m sure most open format DJs like myself used to hear “Drum ‘N Bass” and think right away that you’ll never play whatever the mix is. But now in the age of dubstep/trap/trapstep, things have changed a bit. This 87/174 BPM TC remix of Daft Punk really doesn’t sound out of place in my set at all. It’s more just a matter of how I’m gonna get into it, and then get out of it. (I’ve actually made a transition which starts with the Hot Mouth & The Frederik Remix and goes down to this — Look for it in the pools real soon.) Anyway, this is definitely a dope mix that can definitely be worked in your set if you give it a little thought.
