Last weekend I was getting ready for the club and thinking I really wanted to play some new music. Not much different than gearing up for any weekend. But I couldn’t seem to find anything new in the usual places. Plus, I wanted the “new” music I found to be stuff my crowd would like.
So I did something I’d been meaning to do for a long time. I went back into my hard drive and went through a bunch of vinyl rips from old party breaks, mostly AV8’s.I hadn’t played or heard a lot of them in 3, 4, 5 or even more years. It felt like I was discovering something completely new! But it was familiar. Which was exactly what I was looking for.
I know this isn’t rocket science. We all go back and find old gems we’ve forgotten. But maybe we should do it more often. Finding some of these old AV8’s made me miss the days of 90’s hip-hop party breaks. They were so simple and straight forward, but they were so raw!! To me it’s kind of like listening to hiphop’s heartbeat. I think my crowd thought so too. Those tracks were exactly what I needed for the weekend and they set the party off right!
These are the TOP 5 oldskool party breaks I rediscovered (in no particular order):
1) Puerto Rico 2000 (3 Cuts Mix)
2) Hands In The Air (10 Crack Commandments) – Big Will Rosario
3) Get it on Tonight – Crooklyn Clan
4) Work Dat (Culo Party Mix) – Nel Blanco
5) Roc-A-Way (Get It Up Right Now) – V Smoove & Serg the Sniper
